Occasionally, we're able to offer reduced rates to non-profits, small businesses and educators on a case by case basis. If you fall into one of these groups and are facing significant barriers to accessing our services due to cost, please inquire abut reduced rates.
We also have many clients who access our services through various employment training grants.
Yes, we would be happy to connect through a free 30-minute discovery call. A discovery call allows us to connect before initiating a project or training series to answer questions, identify goals and learn more about each other.
Clients are required to provide notice of cancellation at least 48 business hours prior to the scheduled virtual workshop and 7 business days prior to the in person services. Failure to do so will result in the charge of a cancellation fee.
In the event of rescheduling due to illness or unavailability of a member of Bakau Consulting, a full refund will be provided or alternatively rescheduled at a later date. No refunds will be issued if Client is unable to meet COVID-19 safety requirements.
Yes, we require a non-refundable 50% upfront deposit for all projects.
Our recording fees account for the ongoing use of our intellectual property. In the age of Zoom, we are pleased to be able to offer content that can be recorded and viewed numerous times, by potentially hundreds of members of staff in an organization. These fees allow us to be compensated for the ongoing learning our recorded workshops provide.
Our 14-day recording option allows your team members who may have missed the session to catch up within 2 weeks. If you plan to use the workshop recording for ongoing training, onboarding new staff and to continually refer back to, we recommend our annual subscription option.
All workshop fees are a flat rate for a 2-hour virtual workshop, 2-hour in-person presentation or 5-hour in-person interactive workshop. Any additional hours will be billed at an hourly rate. We typically don’t do workshops less than 2-hours but may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Fundamentals of Anti-Oppression is our compulsory first workshop that we ask all clients take part in before progressing to others. We do Fundamentals first in order to build a firm foundation to build upon in future sessions. Folks come to this work from all different levels of familiarity, so Fundamentals allows all attendees to develop and solidify their anti-oppressive understandings.
This way, in subsequent sessions, we are building instead of back-tracking; knowing folks are working with the same foundational pieces to better engage with what comes next. We have found that this allows all other work together to go much deeper!
During the live presentation of our virtual workshops, we enable Zoom’s live closed captioning and transcription features. We are happy to be able to support more accessible spaces in real time and also we are always seeking ways to improve our accessibility offerings.
Our solidarity fee is offered to facilitators when they are expected to do the additional emotional labour of being tokenized. For example, we typically experience an uptick in bookings during Black History Month, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Pride Month and so on.
Facilitators whose lived experience is being drawn upon to educate allies deserve additional compensation during these times. 100% of the solidarity fee goes to your facilitator.
Pay it Forward is a term used for benevolent giving that will benefit someone in the future. It’s based on values like community care, solidarity and equity. Maybe you’ve experienced it yourself... Have you ever gone to pay for something, maybe in a drive-thru, only to find out some else already paid your bill? That’s paying it forward, and it feels pretty good!
Our Pay it Forward fee is the same principle; a small percentage is added to your service cost which we put towards making our work more accessible for others. What this looks like in action is supporting the sustainability of our reduced pricing structure, program scholarships, and more!
This is a required fee for our services. We understand this may be a new experience for some and so we’re very grateful for your support! If you have further questions or if the fee poses a significant barrier to your capacity to access our services, please connect with us.
We’re excited to finally be able to share physical space with you again! What sets our in-person interactive workshops apart is the combination of our carefully curated and well-researched content of our virtual workshops with more embodied activities, including group and breakout discussions, team-building exercises, brain-teasers and more. Most importantly, the extended time allocated for our interactive workshops allows us to go deep into meaningful, transformative dialogue about essential topics together.
When designing our in-person interactive workshops, audience engagement is our top priority. To create rich, dynamic dialogue and discussion, we expand the base format of our signature virtual workshops to be more interactive, human-centered and flexible—a style which allows us to make the most of being in a shared physical space. While our virtual workshops are education-driven and tailored to suit online learning, in-person workshops are a chance to go deeper into equity-informed topics through collective reflection and conversation.
The safety of both our participants and team members is paramount. Workshop safety must be a collaborative effort between the Bakau team and our clients, especially when we are entering a space as an invited guest.
Please note that because the topics we cover are about oppression, some content may feel overwhelming or triggering and attendees are welcome and encouraged to put their wellbeing first. We will give content warnings throughout the session where relevant, but if you require an outline of content warnings beforehand, please connect with our team.
Our in-person interactive workshops feature an extended time to allow for the unique connection opportunities of sharing physical space together to flourish. We pride ourselves on the level of engagement we foster virtually, and we can’t wait to go even further with you in person through more embodied activities.
Our structure for in-person interactive workshops allows for more fluidity and collaboration between participants and our strategists and facilitators. The direction of our time together evolves based on reflections, experiences and contributions of the folks present. Upon request, our team is happy to provide a template of how we structure the day and if needed we can work collaboratively to adapt the session to suit your needs.
Think of our in-person presentations like you would a keynote, conference presentation or speaking engagement. It’s an opportunity to bring in one of our expert team members to speak on a topic from our workshop roster in a focused style. Our time in an in-person presentation is fully dedicated to the topic, whereas a workshop has added time for activities, group discussions, etc.
In-person presentations can be standalone events or built into professional development days, retreats or conferences.
Small groups are great for interactive workshops as it gives everyone a chance to get involved. Our maximum is 30 people. For our presentations that mirror a talk or keynote, exceptions may be made.
Our in-person service map covers the City of Vancouver, the City of Burnaby and the City of Toronto.
If you’re outside of this range please don’t hesitate to be in touch with your request since we can accommodate other locations on a case-by-case basis with an additional travel fee. For bookings beyond the Lower Mainland or beyond a 50km radius of our home base, travel expenses such as mileage at the rate of $0.68/km, flights and ferries will apply. If an overnight stay is required, we ask that accommodation costs and per diems for food are also covered.
Recording and closed captioning add-ons are only available for virtual workshops.
We recommend considering an In-Person Presentation if you’re working within a shorter time allowance. Unlike our In-Person Interactive Workshops, In-person Presentations are two hours long. These sessions are designed for conference-style settings, so depending on the context of your event, we are open to discussing shorter sessions.
Please see our setup checklist. Clients are responsible for setting up the space in an appropriate way and communicating information about the space with the facilitator.
Here are some possible ways to set up the seating in your space.
We expect clients to take the utmost care when inviting us into their space, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. We are continuing to follow the Province of British Columbia’s public health guidelines and will be working in line with them. Changes to the guidelines could occur at any time.
Our facilitators will take a rapid antigen test before the session and if the test is positive, they will not be able to facilitate. In this event, we will let you know promptly and we appreciate your understanding that health emergencies have an increased likelihood in the pandemic. We will work with you to find another date for your session.
